To Chris Husbands VC
Sheffield Hallam University is one of the best universities in the country for valuing and taking care of staff. It's why so many staff feel loyalty to the university and it's something you should be very proud of overseeing.
But this isn't the case for all staff. Cleaners all over the university work gruelling shifts but have to struggle with the rising tide of bills and rent, let alone the costs of looking after a family.
The Real Living Wage which takes all the costs of living into account is calculated at £8.75 for the UK - just to live without basic financial struggles. The National Minimum Wage that the cleaners are currently paid is far below that and it's not enough to make ends meet.
There lots of benefits for paying The Real Living Wage. Not only does it empower employees, but it also allows people to have more time with families and as a result increase motivation, health, wellbeing and job satisfaction.
Please renegotiate the contract SHU uses for cleaning, to make sure that all cleaners get paid at least the Real Living Wage. Everyone who works at SHU should be valued for the work they contribute as part of the university, regardless of what work that is.
